Outdated entertainment technologies
Since I’ve returned to the states, I am reminded that the Dallas suburbs are not a very inspiring location to spend time after returning from France. Maybe this is because I grew up here, and definitely has to do with my return to the familiar, but understanding why doesn’t exactly help. In order to combat the onset of ennui I decided to rent a film to help further my research into silly space scenarios. This is what I watched last night. The story was not so good, but the costumes and effects were great. There was also a documentary “extra” about Ray Harryhausen and Dynamation.
Je suis retourné
I am now back from 3 1/2 months in France. For the last couple of days I’ve been adjusting to the warm, wet weather, jetlag, and a much different schedule. I don’t think I’ve had enough distance from the experience yet to really gage the impact it has had on me or my work. I know that the intensified experience of being in the studio for many hours a day, with the same people, helped to focus me on my projects. A lack of familiar, comfortable, personal space meant that many of us spent the majority of our waking hours working in the submarine. As uncomfortable as this may seem, it provided many of us with a routine that was focused on daily art-making. This is the major habit I hope to continue now that I am back in the States.
Since I have 3 weeks of errands as well as trips to see friends and family, I will have to find creative ways to keep working up until the moment I leave for Mexico. I think I will start to draft some outlines for the ideas/projects I will explore while I am there (as well as doing a bit of food research).
Before I can get to any of these ideas, my primary challenge is to keep this “new” computer from dying on me. As much as I rely on technology, I’m beginning to lose faith in apple since they keep giving me lemons.
From the mind of Barchael:
Here is the new barchael video project “You Know You’re In Space Because…“. This is a video loop which deals with distance, dislocation, and miscommunication. The loop creates a never-ending selection of possibilities for gaps that happen between people. In the installation, the viewer is implicated in the scenario by being the only connection point between both explorers in the videos.
